I am Venezuelan musician in the US. I had about 15+ years of professional experience when I came to the US to pursue a masters degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy at Ohio University under the tutelage of Dr. Christopher Fisher. It was so great that I decided to continue my studies at OU, pursuing the PhD in Interdisciplinary Arts. I am in the Scholar/Artist track, which means that I combine research in musicology and ethnomusicology with my creative work, which is centered in piano performance.
During my time at Ohio University, I have been an instructor at the School of Music and at the Interdisciplinary Arts School. In music, I have taught piano in groups for music-major college students, a collaborative pianist for choirs (University Singers and Choral Union) as well as vocal and instrumental studios. I have also been a private piano instructor and the founder-director of the Piano Ensembles Project at the Athens Community Music School. During summer programs, I have taught several classes for the ACMS and for the OU Music Academy, such as Introduction to Piano Safari, Piano Ensembles, Body Percussion and Movement, and Latin American Dance. For IARTS, I have been an instructor of two Introductory courses to the Arts for undergraduate students: "Arts in Contexts" and "Objects and Events".
In my research, I focus on contemporary music and diaspora. I am studying Venezuelan new music written in exile, its cultural implications and aesthetics. I am always interested in new music and have been able to premier works for piano solo and chamber music by Juan Manuel Sanchez, David Longa, Angel Hernandez Lovera, Jorge Diaz, Ricardo Teruel (Venezuela), Ryne Siesky, Matt Dowler, Dave Davenport, and Bobby Lucas (US), among others.
I am grateful to have received the Seigfred Outstanding Teacher Award (2021), Silvia Reynolds Eckes Scholarship (2017-2019), the 2nd Prize at the Ohio International Piano Duo & Duet Competition with Teodora Owen (2018), the Graduate Achievement in Performance Award at the Annual OU School of Music Honors Assembly (2018), and the OU Diversity Fellowship (2019-2020).
Three of my Elementary Piano Ensemble pieces are published by Piano Safari, as well an advanced arrangement of the Venezuelan waltz "Mi Teresita" by Teresa Carreno by TimerWarp for the SuperScore music app. Part of my teaching philosophy can be found at the article “The Power of Piano Ensembles: Building Collaboration, Musicianship, and Community” for The Piano Magazine: Clavier Companion published in 2019. I have presented at several conferences such as MTNA Symposia, National Conference of MTNA and NCKP, LAMI Festival, as part of the OU Collegiate Chapter and individually. In the 2021 online edition of the NCKP, she presented a Virtual Piano Ensemble with the performance contribution of 14 piano teachers for the US and Venezuela.
I have served at the office of the OU MTNA Collegiate Chapter as treasurer (2017-2018) and vice-president (2018-2020). I have been part of the Student Advisory Committee for IARTS during the PhD studies (2019-present). I currently hold the president position for the Southeast District of the OhioMTA (2022-2023).
Regarding my studies in Venezuela before coming to the US, I graduated from the Conservatorio Nacional de Musica Juan Jose Landaeta (Piano Performance Diploma, 2004), the Universidad Central de Venezuela (Bachelor of Psychology, focus on Social Psychology, 2008) and the Universidad Simon Bolivar (Masters of Music, Piano Performance, 2012). I also pursued several music courses at the Escuela de Musica Ars Nova, Escuela de Musica Mozarteum Caracas, and El Sistema.
My piano mentors have been Elizabeth Guerrero, Carlos Urbaneja, Abraham Abreu, Manuel Laufer, Stephanie Wu, Emely Phelps, and Christopher Fisher. I have received piano master classes and lessons in Venezuela, Europe, and the US from Judith Jaimes, Frank Fernández, Walter Blankenheim, Carlos Duarte, Gabriela Montero, Roger Muraro, Monique Duphil, Prisca Benoit, Michel Beroff, Laura Mikkola, Kristiina Junttu, Edith Peña, Vadym Kholodenko, Michael Chertock, Rachel Kudo, and Kwan Yi.
Besides the piano, I have studied organ with Paul Barte and Pablo Castellanos; harpsichord with Rubén Guzmán and Bruno Procopio and she have received classes of baroque music at courses with Isabel Palacios, Jacques Ogg, Ketil Haugsand, Alessandro Santoro, among others. I obtained an advanced certificate at Ohio University in choral conducting, studying with Bradley Naylor and Paul Mayhew and have studied composition with Mark Phillips.
In my native city, Caracas, I was a piano teacher a collaborative pianist at important institutions such as Mozarteum Caracas School of Music, Colegio Emil Friedman, Schola Cantorum de Venezuela, Camerata Barroca, and the UNESCO awarded network “El Sistema”. At El Sistema, I was the pianist of the Teresa Carreño Youth Symphony Orchestra, and a collaborative pianist of the Latin American Academy of Flutes. Along with El Sistema and the Schola Cantorum of Venezuela, I participated of multiple concerts and festivals at the most prestigious venues in Europe, Asia, and the US, under the baton of internationally known artists such as Gustavo Dudamel, Christian Vazquez, Diego Matheuz, Alberto Grau, and María Guinand. I also have performed as a soloist with the Orquesta Barroca Simón Bolívar, Orquesta de Cámara Mozarteum Caracas, Orquesta Filarmónica Nacional de Venezuela, Orquesta Juvenil de Caracas, Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar de Venezuela, and Orquesta Sinfónica Municipal de Caracas.
